Digital Literacy & Common Core

on April 8, 2013

Great article on Digital Literacy and Common Core. What exactly do the CCSS say about digital literacy?  This blogger explains how he answers that question with the technology he uses in his classroom.

  1. This is a fantastic article, which I have saved to my LiveBinder. I’m particularly interested in his comments about integrating online and off line research. I wouldn’t have thought of integration as a separate skill until a couple years ago when I was teaching a research unit to fourth graders. We spent a lot of time with both print and digital media, but the students were noticeably biassed in favor of one or the other — some students based most of their end products on the book research and some ignored the book research in favor of the internet facts. In light of this article, if I was to teach this unit again, I’d want to discuss with them their reasons for choosing one set of facts over the other, why it’s good to have both sets, and how to resolve conflicts between the two.

Excellent article. That’s what we’ve been saying all along, teachers need to be taught how to use the tools and how to best teach using them before they’re put in front of the students. We just had a jr. high meeting this afternoon to discuss making digital tools more available and teaching things at a younger and younger age. I have added it to my Diigo account. Thank you.
